Essay on A Canticle for Leibowitz
Four essay prompts on the whole novel, on Miller's view of pain, evil, style, and Natural Law.
Mr. Reed
Choose one (1) of the following prompts on which to write your essay.
- 1. Through Dom Zerchi, Miller asserts that pain is good. How does he support that assertion in all three sections?
- 2. Miller creates three characters (at least) to represent his own view of evil. Identify those characters and explain how each contributes to Miller’s theory of evil. You must consider at least one character from each section of the novel.
- 3. How does Miller’s style help to communicate his themes? Though you may choose to focus on only one aspect of style, you must include details from each of the three sections of the novel.
- 4. Miller asserts that the world operates according to Natural Law. Show how he emphasizes this idea in each section of his novel.
In a fully developed essay (at least three paragraphs long) answer your chosen question by using concrete details and specific explanations to support any and every assertion that you make. Use information from each of the three sections of the novel to make your case.
Your essay will be graded on accuracy of interpretation of Miller’s work, completeness of development, degree of coherence, correctness of grammar and mechanics, and level of overall neatness.
Please staple this sheet - along with your prewriting - to the top of your essay and circle the number of the prompt on which you have written your essay.
