Darmok Exercise
A follow-up exercise on "Darmok" that links allusion and metaphor to "My Last Duchess."

UNIT: Poetry
DAY: 17
Assignment to have been completed: Students should have watched “Darmok.”
Objectives: To recognize the impact of allusion and metaphor on communication
Activities:
- A. Distribute the activity. Explain to students that they have ten minutes to complete the activity working on their own. They may not consult any reference sources or any other student.
- B. After ten minutes have elapsed, allow the students ten minutes to move about the room getting help from whomever they can.
- C. After ten more minutes have elapsed, allow the students to consult online sources or dictionaries.
- D. After ten more minutes, share the responses on the key you found with the activity. Encourage students who disagree with the responses on the key to share and explain their answers. Do this after giving the key’s response to each item.
- E. Distribute the AP multiple-choice practice on “My Last Duchess.” Remind students to use dictionaries to make sure they understand the meanings of all the words.
Assignment for next class meeting: Read “My Last Duchess,” pp. 775-776. Answer the questions on the handout.
